Quick answer: MDHHS runs SNAP in Michigan as the Food Assistance Program (FAP), with applications through MI Bridges.

Nearly every household is held to a 200% gross limit ($5,500 a month for four from October 1, 2026), most have no asset test, and benefits post to the Michigan Bridge Card on an odd day from the 3rd to the 21st.

Eligibility

Michigan's 200% table, copied from MDHHS policy RFT 250

Michigan prints its own 200% chart in policy table RFT 250, and MDHHS starts using it on October 1, 2026. Several rows sit $1 higher than our own 200% math would give, so every figure below is lifted straight from the MDHHS table. A family of four can gross up to $5,500 a month.

Michigan Food Assistance Program (FAP) gross and net monthly income limits and maximum monthly benefit by household size
HouseholdGross limit (200%)Net limitMax benefit
1 person$2,660$1,330$306
2 people$3,608$1,804$562
3 people$4,554$2,277$808
4 people$5,500$2,750$1,023
5 people$6,448$3,224$1,217
6 people$7,394$3,697$1,463
7 people$8,340$4,170$1,616
8 people$9,288$4,644$1,841

Each extra person adds $474 to the net limit and $225 to the maximum benefit.

Gross limit rule: MDHHS RFT 250: SNAP Income Limits (effective October 1, 2026). Net limits and maximum benefits: USDA Food and Nutrition Administration FY2027 standards. Verified October 26, 2026.

Categorical status is lost when anyone in the group carries a fraud (IPV) or fleeing felon disqualification, or when the head of household is under a work-related penalty. Those groups face the 130% gross test ($1,729 solo, $3,575 with four members), the net test and an asset check.

These are column D of MDHHS reference table RFT 250, effective October 1, 2026, which Michigan labels its 200% categorical limit. Add $948 a month for each person past eight. Columns A and B, the 130% gross and 100% net tests, do not apply to categorically eligible groups.

When a senior, disabled or disabled veteran member lives in a group grossing above 200%, Michigan drops the gross test. The group can still qualify if net income is under 100% of poverty and countable assets are within MDHHS's limit for such groups.

Meeting the income limit does not guarantee benefits. Your amount is figured from net income after deductions, so a household near the limit may get a small benefit or none.

A married couple renting a Lansing duplex: $2,400 monthly from one spouse's job at an auto parts plant, a $125 monthly annuity check, $850 rent, and a gas furnace on their own bill
  1. 1Their $2,525 gross is above the federal 130% test of $2,345, which on its own would end the case. Michigan's categorical line for two is $3,608, so MDHHS moves on to the benefit math.
  2. 2One fifth of the paycheck ($480) comes off, and so does the flat $217 deduction, leaving $1,828. Since heat is on them, MDHHS adds its $706 heat and utility standard to the $850 rent, a shelter cost of $1,556.
  3. 3Whatever shelter cost tops $914, which is half of $1,828, becomes the deduction: $642, below the $769 ceiling. Net income is therefore $1,186. The couple's maximum is $562; minus 30% of net ($356), roughly $206 reaches their Michigan Bridge Card each month.

The card pays for groceries and seeds or plants that grow food, not alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, hot prepared food, pet food or household supplies.

Payment schedule

Odd days from the 3rd to the 21st, set by your recipient ID

Michigan loads food assistance on odd-numbered days from the 3rd to the 21st. The day comes from the last digit of the head of household's recipient ID number. MDHHS policy notes that this ID does not appear on the Bridge Card itself.

Get started

MI Bridges first, or a paper MDHHS-1171 at the county office

MDHHS calls MI Bridges the best way to apply; the same account shows your status and takes change reports. A paper Assistance Application (MDHHS-1171) can be hand delivered, mailed or faxed to your county MDHHS office, and you can pick one up there during business hours without an appointment.

A specialist interviews you before MDHHS decides, in person, by phone or on a home call. Turn the application in at an office and MDHHS tries to interview you that same day, though you may wait. If the interview never happens, policy says the application is denied on the 30th day.

MDHHS asks for ID, Social Security numbers for applicants, proof of income or the date it stopped, bank and 401(k) balances, rent or mortgage, heat and utility bills, child support you pay, day care costs and immigration papers if any. Most proof must be dated within 30 days, and you generally get 10 days to send it.

MDHHS must approve or deny regular food assistance within 30 days. Expedited cases must have a Bridge Card and benefits by the seventh calendar day: under $150 gross income with $100 or less in liquid assets, income plus liquid assets below rent and utilities, or a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker.

The domestic violence services link behind Michigan's 200% line

Michigan reaches 200% of poverty through an unusual door. Food assistance groups are categorically eligible based on enhanced authorization for Domestic Violence Prevention Services (DVPS), as long as gross income is at or below 200% of the poverty level.

For those groups MDHHS treats the asset test and both regular income tests as met, and does not separately verify the 130% and 100% limits, Social Security numbers, sponsor details or residency for food assistance. They are checked only if no other program has already verified them.

Categorical eligibility is not automatic approval. A group with three or more members whose net income works out to a zero benefit is still denied, and MDHHS will hold a likely categorical case open until day 30 rather than deny it early.

Over the usual limits but under 200%: what a small case receives

Households of one or two that pass 130% gross or 100% net, but stay under 200%, automatically get the minimum benefit. Larger households in the same spot can be paid as little as $1 a month under MDHHS's issuance table.

The first month is prorated from the application date, and nothing is issued for that month if the prorated amount is under $10. Regular monthly benefits after that follow the normal calculation.

Time Limited Food Assistance: who still escapes the clock

MDHHS says USDA ended its time limit waiver on February 28, 2026, so the rule began in March. It covers adults 18 to 64 without a child under 14 at home, with some deferrals for Native Americans. Livingston, Kent outside Grand Rapids and Oakland outside Oak Park and Pontiac were covered from October 1, 2025.

Still waived under the H.R. 1 criteria: Alcona, Alger, Arenac, Cheboygan, Iosco, Iron, Luce, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oceana, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Schoolcraft counties, and the cities of Bay City, Detroit, Eastpointe, Flint, Jackson and Saginaw.

Elsewhere, meet the rule with 80 hours a month of paid, in-kind or volunteer work, earnings equal to 20 hours a week at federal minimum wage, or a Michigan Works! training program. Community service hours equal the benefit divided by Michigan's minimum wage. Report hours at 1-844-464-3447 or in MI Bridges.

Heat bills, the $706 standard and the Home Heating Credit

Michigan uses fixed utility standards instead of actual bills. From October 1, 2026 the heat and utility standard is $706 a month; households without heat costs may get smaller amounts, such as $187 for non-heat electric, $123 for water or sewer, or $32 for a phone.

For a group with a senior, a disabled member or a disabled veteran, a Home Heating Credit of more than $20 may raise the food benefit. MDHHS calls it use-it-or-lose-it: tell your caseworker, or say on the application that you got one this month or in the past 12 months.

Why MDHHS is pushing reporting: the payment error rate bill

Under the 2025 federal law, Michigan pays 75% of SNAP administrative costs starting in FY 2027, up from half, and may owe up to 15% of benefit costs depending on its payment error rate. States under 6% keep full federal funding of benefits.

Michigan's rate was 9.53% in FY 2024, against a national average of 10.9%, and its FY 2026 rate sets the cost share. MDHHS stresses that the rate measures mistakes, not fraud, and is asking households to report income, job, household and address changes promptly.

Chip Bridge Cards are coming, and skimmed benefits are not repaid

MDHHS says chip and tap-enabled Bridge Cards arrive later in 2026. To get yours, confirm your mailing address in MI Bridges under Report Changes. Look for the Quest logo, or ask, before paying at a store.

Replacement of food benefits stolen through skimming, cloning or phishing covered only thefts from October 1, 2022 through December 20, 2024. Benefits lost when a card is stolen, or used by someone you gave it or the PIN to, are not replaced. Call 1-888-678-8914 right away to cancel a card.

Contesting an MDHHS food decision before MOAHR

You have 90 calendar days from the written notice to ask for a hearing. For food assistance alone, the request can be oral or written, and you can dispute your current benefit level at any point in the benefit period. The Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules decides.

A request made before a pending cut takes effect, or within 11 days of an immediate one, counts as timely under BAM 600. Food-only hearings must reach a final decision within 60 days of the request.

Only in Michigan

Two names, three non-citizen groups and a short reporting list

Michigan's own pages now use both names. Older MDHHS pages say Food Assistance Program or FAP, while the 2026 policy tables and newer pages say SNAP. The benefit, the Bridge Card and MI Bridges are the same either way.

After the 2025 federal law, MDHHS policy BEM 225 lists three qualified non-citizen groups for food assistance: lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants, and citizens of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau under the Compacts of Free Association.

Simplified reporters only have two things to report between reviews: a lottery or gambling win of $4,750 or more (MDHHS's flyer still says $4,500), or total household income going over the limit printed on the approval notice. MDHHS sends a check-in notice every 6 months.

Free legal help with a hearing may be available through legal aid; the State Bar of Michigan keeps a list of legal programs by county. Callers who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired can reach MDHHS lines through the Michigan Relay Center at 7-1-1.

Savings stopped counting for most cases in March 2024: MDHHS stopped applying an asset limit to most food assistance groups on March 1, 2024.

Only groups with a member disqualified for fraud or as a fleeing felon, or a head of household under an employment penalty, are tested: $3,000, rising to $4,750 if a group member has turned 60 or is disabled (USDA's FY2027 figure; MDHHS's BEM 400 still shows $4,500). Your first home is never counted.

Work rules: Since March 1, 2026, adults 18 to 64 with no child under 14 at home have 3 countable months in 36 unless they work, volunteer or train 80 hours a month. Fifteen counties and six cities, Detroit and Flint among them, remain waived, and FNA lists Michigan with a partial waiver for October to December 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Michigan food assistance questions, answered from MDHHS policy

From October 1, 2026, gross monthly income up to $2,660 for one person, $3,608 for two, $4,554 for three and $5,500 for four, under MDHHS's 200% categorical table. Groups with a member disqualified for fraud, or as a fleeing felon, face the 130% gross and 100% net tests instead.

Yes. FAP is Michigan's name for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, run by MDHHS. Newer MDHHS pages and the 2026 policy tables mostly say SNAP, but the benefit, the Michigan Bridge Card and MI Bridges are unchanged.

Not for most households. MDHHS dropped the asset limit for most groups on March 1, 2024.

Only groups with a member disqualified for fraud or as a fleeing felon, or a head of household under an employment penalty, face a $3,000 limit, or $4,750 with someone 60 or older or disabled (USDA's FY2027 figure; MDHHS's manual still shows $4,500).

It depends on the last digit of the head of household's recipient ID: 0 on the 3rd, 1 on the 5th, 2 on the 7th, and so on every other day to 9 on the 21st. That ID is not printed on the Bridge Card.

Fifteen counties (Alcona, Alger, Arenac, Cheboygan, Iosco, Iron, Luce, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oceana, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Schoolcraft) and six cities: Bay City, Detroit, Eastpointe, Flint, Jackson and Saginaw. Everywhere else, the 3-month limit has applied since March 1, 2026.

Yes. USDA's food restriction waiver list, updated October 13, 2026, does not include Michigan, so the usual federal food rules apply. Prepared restaurant meals are allowed only through the Restaurant Meal Program for eligible members.

Expedited cases must have benefits by the seventh calendar day after applying. You qualify with under $150 gross income and $100 or less in liquid assets, when income plus liquid assets fall below rent and utilities, or as a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker.

Not for current thefts. Michigan's fraud replacement covered food benefits stolen from October 1, 2022 through December 20, 2024 only. Call Bridge Card customer service at 1-888-678-8914 to cancel the card, and watch for the chip cards MDHHS plans to mail later in 2026.

Within 90 days of the notice, in writing on form DHS-18 or orally, since food assistance allows oral requests. A request made before the change takes effect is timely under MDHHS policy. The Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules must decide food-only cases within 60 days.
