$2,170
+$75 a month, +$900 a year
An estimate, not your notice. SSA applies the COLA to your primary insurance amount, so the real figure can differ by a few cents or a dollar.
The 2027 Part B premium is not out yet
Medicare had not announced its 2027 premium when we checked on October 18, 2026. Until it does, this tool takes the premium you enter out of both years, so the raise shown is the COLA alone.
Your check does not grow by exactly 3.6 percent. SSA's actuaries describe three steps, each with its own rounding.
Raise the base amount
The COLA is applied to your primary insurance amount, then cut to the next lower dime.
Take out Medicare
Any Part B premium is subtracted from the new amount.
Round the payment down
What is left is cut to the next lower whole dollar. That is the deposit.
Rounding rule source: Social Security Handbook section 738.
SSI comes first. SSA says the increased SSI payments begin on December 31, 2026, so the first higher check lands before the new year.
Social Security benefits rise with the January 2027 payment. Your exact deposit date depends on your birthday, which our Social Security payment schedule lays out month by month.
For how SSA set the 3.6% figure and what else changes in 2027, read our Social Security COLA 2027 guide.
SSA says COLA notices reach most my Social Security accounts in late November 2026. Paper notices go out in December.
The COLA also resets work limits and tax figures. If you get disability benefits, the earnings limits matter as much as the raise.

Read guideIt is 3.6 percent. SSA announced it on October 14, 2026, based on the rise in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026. SSA says retirement benefits rise by about $75 a month on average.
Social Security benefits rise starting with the January 2027 payment. SSI recipients get the increase first, in the payment SSA sends on December 31, 2026. Most people can read their COLA notice in their my Social Security account from late November 2026.
SSA rounds down twice. The COLA is applied to your primary insurance amount and the result is cut to the next lower dime. After any Part B premium is taken out, the payment is cut to the next lower dollar.
It can. SSA deducts the Part B premium from your benefit before it rounds the payment. The 2026 standard premium is $202.90 a month, and Medicare had not announced the 2027 premium when this page was checked on October 18, 2026.
Usually by less than the full amount. The federal SSI rate rises $35 for an individual, from $994 to $1,029. But Social Security counts as unearned income for SSI, so a Social Security raise lowers your SSI by about the same number of dollars.
